Fred A. Harvie 1929-2005
Fred Harvie, our Society’s Chairman of Buildings and
Grounds, died at Fletcher Allen Health Center in
Burlington in September, following heart surgery.
For 25 years he took loving care of Eaton Hall inside
and out. His work as a consummate woodworker is evident
in the many wall cabinets he built in the Belcher
exhibit room and storage areas. Fred’s exhibit of his
tool collection in one of the cabinets will help to keep
his memory alive for years to come. Fred’s wife, Jean,
and family have very kindly suggested that donations be
sent to the Society in his memory.

Pittsford Historical Society Elects 2006 Board
Officers and trustees were elected at the annual meeting
of the Pittsford Historical Society on October 16. The
new Board will take office on January 1 next year. Peg
Armitage was reelected president, as was vice president
Anne Pelkey. Rebecca Davenport is recording secretary;
Dorothea Parker will continue as corresponding
secretary. Barbara Poljacik was elected treasurer to
succeed Jean Harvie, who will retire after 25 years of
outstanding service in that office.
Trustees include Betty Atwood, Terri Davis, and new
member Matthew Jefferson. Len Lumsden will continue as
immediate past president. Following a bountiful potluck
supper, Lois Blittersdorf gave a fascinating talk on her
father's survival of the Johnstown, PA, flood in 1889.
Julius "Jack" Hofmann then age 8, lost his parents, a
grandfather, and his eldest sister in the flood. He and
his other brothers and sisters grew up in orphanages,
where they soon learned to speak English (the immigrant
family only spoke German at home). Jack moved his family
to Pittsford in 1946, where he was proprietor of
Hofmann's Books and Antiques until shortly before his
death, in 1964. Lois incorporated notes from his memoir,
which he wrote in the 1930s for the benefit of his
heirs. |
