November 2003
Holiday Open House December 7, 2003
The 4th membership meeting of the year will be a
Holiday Open House in the Museum at Eaton Hall from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 7th. Members and guests are invited to join the
officers and trustees for holiday refreshments and John Rouleau's
fiddling. Please bring fruit, snacks, or a dessert to share. The
Society will provide beverages.
This is your chance to select gifts from the
Museum’s store of books, maps, drawings, and Society caps. Friends and
relatives will treasure Pittsford’s Second Century, Pittsford Now and
Then, Gleanings, or Catherine Crockett Christmas Cards for years to
come.

Eaton
Hall will be closed for the winter following the December 7 Open
House, and will reopen in March, 2004. However, messages left on the
Museum phone will be checked regularly (802) 483-2040).
Welcome to New Members, and a 90th Birthday
Six new members joined the Society in recent
months. Bonnie (Paul) and Ivon Capowski, Clarabelle (Hasbrouck) and
Donald Breault, and Jon and Sharon Heymers are all residents of
Pittsford. Hope (Adams) Shannon celebrated her 90th birthday this year.
Her Adams ancestors settled in Pittsford in 1784. |
Civil War Period Exhibit
If you missed the Pittsford and Chittenden
Societies' joint exhibit at the Vermont History Expo 2003 in June,
you’ll find many of the items from that exhibit resembled in the Jane
Belcher Room for this one day. We created a sitting room furnished with
local Civil War period items from Society collections and others loaned
by Pittsford and Chittenden residents.
Fran
Wheeler’s amazingly detailed diorama of the ladies of the
Chittenden Soldier’s Aid Society making bandages will be on display; it
was the hit of our show last summer. We look forward to greeting you,
your family and friends on the 7th.
Please
note that Lois Blittersdorf is no longer able to receive genealogical
inquiries due to impaired vision. Requests for information on your
family can be directed to Jean Harvie by e-mail to jean1953@sover.net or
by mail to the Pittsford Historical Society, PO Box 423, Pittsford, VT
05763. Jean is also handling orders for our award-winning book,
Pittsford’s Second Century - 1872-1997. An order form is available on
the Society’s Website; the price is $50 plus $3.50 shipping and
handling. We suggest ordering the companion book of photos,
Pittsford Now and Then, published in 1980; the price is $7.50 plus
$2.50 S&H. It contains 19th and 20th Century photos of Pittsford people
and scenes, which are not included in Second Century.

The October Business meeting!
Anne Pelkey received a long round of applause for her
years of extraordinary service to the Society. Anne in turn thanked
outgoing Board members Doris Hoare and Ernie Brod for their contributions,
and welcomed two new trustees, Ed Keith and Barbara Poljacik.
After the potluck supper and business meeting,
Pittsford native Tom Browe delighted us with tales of 25 years as the first
executive director of the Rutland County Humane Society. With his
well-known wit and humor, Tom delivered sobering yet optimistic remarks on
the welfare of our companion animals and their wild cousins. Many of his
volunteers are also past or present members of the Historical Society, among
them Tom’s parents Arlene and Ken Browe, Kay Killoran, Ed Wheeler, Elinor
Pike, Jocelyn and Emerson Frost, and Madeline Lundrigan.

In
Memoriam
The
Society notes with sympathy to her family the passing of Lillian Hier
Rice. Lillian was a past president and for some 30 years a steadfast
promoter of the Society. Gifts received in her memory will support our
mission to collect, preserve, and interpret our collections.
The
Society extends heartfelt sympathy to Anne Pelkey and her family.
Anne’s son-in-law, Staff Sgt. Scott Rose of the US Army’s 101st Airborne
Division died in Iraq when his heli-copter was shot down. He leaves his
wife Michele and their infant daughter, whom he never saw.

Membership
Information
Doris Hoare Is New Chair of Membership Committee
Membership committee co-chairs Toni Frett and Lois
Blittersdorf recently retired after more than 10 years of keeping track of
some 200 far-flung members. Doris Hoare assumed their duties in October.
She will accept dues for 2004 at the December 7 Open House.
Dues are based on a calendar year. Your dues support
annual operating expenses of Eaton Hall, which include heat, electricity,
insurance, telephone, and archival supplies, together with printing
newsletters and postage. It would be impossible to carry on without your
help.
Remembering the Historical Society in your will, giving
a donation in memory of a relative or friend, or donating items for our yard
sales might be considered when you think of helping maintain the
organization.

SAVE & CLEAN
With Spring hopefully right around the
corner, many of you will be cleaning out your attics, garages, and
basements. Before you throw away old items, please think of the Historical
Society. We are specifically interested in artifacts, photographs, diaries,
published material, etc., that have Pittsford roots. And remember any
photos, documents, or newspaper clippings that you do plan to keep should be
stored in acid free material.
